Grade 8 Language Arts
We are currently doing some Shakespeare exploration. Each class has chosen one of Shakespeare’s more famous plays to read and investigate. In addition to reading pivotal scenes from his work, we will be watching some BBC Shakespeare and writing about it.
For our summative assessment on Bomb, and for our next unit in Language Arts, we will be crafting and presenting debates on different topics related to nuclear weapons. We will focus on common core standard for speaking and listening in Literacy, “Literacy.S.L.8.4 Present claims and findings, emphasizing salient points in a focused, coherent manner with relevant evidence, sound valid reasoning, and well-chosen details; use appropriate eye contact, adequate volume, and clear pronunciation.
For our next integrated unit, we will be studying the roaring twenties and the great depression in social studies. During language arts, we will focus on the skills that writers use to craft compelling narrative fiction and non-fiction. Check out common core writing standard 8.3 for more information on the standard that we will work towards. As we explore examples from other writers, we will focus on the skills that we can use to write our own stories.
